- The most ornamental characteristics of the Sweetgum are the glossy green leaves and the outstanding fall color, which ranges from bright reds, mixed with oranges and touches of yellow. It has an upright, pyramidal crown, especially when young. The drawback to this wonderful tree are the messy seeds. Even trees that are sold as seedless can develop seeds with age, so be careful siting this tree, as the seeds are large ( 1 1/2" across) and spiny. It is a native tree that is worth a place on a large property for it's spectacular display in the fall.
