- Patriot is a recent introduction that has become very popular for a variety of reasons. (Although it was originally introduced in 1992, it has not been widely available in the nursery trade until the last few years. It sold for $875 per plant at its debut, luckily, it sells for a bit less nowadays) This is one of the most exciting Hostas to come along in some time. The foliage is dark green with a broad, wavy margin of pure white, creating an especially strong contrast. It has lavender flowers on 24-30" scapes (stems) in late Summer. 'Patriot' is a sport (and improvement) of the old standard 'Francee', which was popular for many years. 'Patriot' is very similar to 'Hosta 'Fire and Ice', but it has the reverse variegation, and is faster growing. Patriot is also much more tolerant of sun than most hostas. This hosta can be mixed with other perennials in shady borders, shade gardens or woodland gardens, or used as an edging plant. Mass for a showy ground cover. Hostas are a shade garden delight. Their bold foliage adds texture and interest to the garden.
