  • Sweetly fragrant creamy white 2-3" diameter flowers in summer are the main ornamental attribute of this native tree. They are similar to, but smaller than the flowers of the 'Southern Magnolia' They are followed by red seed pods, which are also somewhat similar to those of the Southern Magnolia. The leaves are a light green, with a silvery underside. The habit is usually multi-trunked and shrubby, although they may be pruned up to a tree form. It occurs naturally in wet or swampy soils, and appreciates moisture, although it will grow in ordinary garden soil.
