Oakleaf hydrangea is a native of the southeast United States. The showy white flowers occur in 4-12" long cone shaped clusters. The blooms are long lasting, slowly fading from white to a purplish-pink and finally in the fall to a brownish tan that can used in dried flower arrangements. The large, leathery leaves resemble oak leaves, hence the name. Fall color is variable, but is often a mix of red, orange and purple. As with all Hydrangeas, more sun is tolerated if adequate water is provided. There are several different cultivars available, some smaller in size. One is the Pee Wee Oakleaf Hydrangea which is perfect for smaller spaces. It only grows 3-4' tall and 3-4' wide.
