- Coral Bells (Heuchera) are popular garden plants due to their versatility and wide variety of colors and sizes. They grow in sun or part shade. They have interesting, attractive foliage that grows in neat mounds, with attractive scalloped leaves. Their flowers rise on wiry stems above the foliage, and are bell shaped. The original coral bells are native plants, however in recent years there has been a literal explosion of hybridization and creation of hundreds of new varieties. All heucheras want well drained soil, and most varieties appreciate at least some shade during the heat of the day. Some are more sun tolerant than others however. The variety of leaf colors is astounding, with many variegated forms. Colors include greens, yellows, infinite shades and varieties of purple and burgundy and the newest ones are amber or even orangish in color. Some combinations to consider: 'Hostas' (especially gold varieties with the purple forms), 'Ferns' and 'Lungwort'. In sun, 'Coreopsis Zagreb' is stunning with the dark purple types, 'Kim's Knee High Purple Coneflower' looks great with a Burgundy variety and 'Daylily Stella d'Oro' looks great with any dark leaved type. We have included just a few favorites here, these are some of the best of the new varieties. We will be updating this list as we test more of the new varieties for hardiness.
