Shade Perennial

Fanal Astilbe, Fanal False Spirea

  • Botanical Name:    Astilbe arendsii 'Fanal'
  • Height:    18" to 24"
  • Spread:    24-30" +
  • Exposure:    Part shade
  • Care:    Cut to ground in late fall or early spring before new growth emerges
  • Somewhat Deer resistant
  • This selection is very similar to 'Peach Blossom Astilbe' but is a vigorous dark red selection. New foliage is mahogany red in spring, turning green by summer. Astilbes produce bright plumes of flowers held above the foliage in early summer. They have ferny, finely dissected leaves and perform best in areas where they receive some light, either morning sun or filtered sun. Excess shade will reduce vigor and bloom. They also need adequate moisture and don't do well in very dry areas. In an appropriate location however, they are stellar performers and very reliable and showy stars with a long bloom time and clean foliage that looks great all season long.
