- It has exceptionally dark green, shiny needles and a dense spreading shape. A great foundation planting, or for a woodland border. Plum yews prefers a moist, well-drained soil, but have some drought tolerance once established. If its needs are met, plum yews are rarely bothered by insects or diseases. Japanese plum yews are a wonderful plant for shade gardeners, especially where deer are a problem.
