- This is a great shrub for the back of a perennial border. It blooms all summer long and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds like a magnet. They are available in a multitude of sizes and colors from dwarf to very large and everything in between. Colors include White, Blue, Lavender, Purple, Magenta, Pink, and many shades in between. Butterfly Bushes only bloom on NEW growth of the year, so cut them back very hard (to 1-2' from the ground) in early spring to ensure a bushy plant covered in blooms all summer long. Alternatively, if you really want the height and size (for screening purposes) you can be a little less severe. Keep in mind however that an established Butterfly bush will grow QUICKLY! Excellent drought tolerance once established.
