- The spectacular spring flowers of azaleas and rhododendrons make them among the most popular garden shrubs. They come in a variety of colors, sizes, shapes with a range of bloom times. Culture is the same for all. They prefer partial shade in acid, well drained soil. The best time to prune is right after bloom, as they set flower buds during the summer and fall for the following spring. Do not prune after June. Azaleas have shallow, fibrous root systems, so adequate irrigation is important. Most evergreen species will not tolerate wet soil, however so good drainage is also important. Fertilize yearly with Hollytone.
