- A wonderful and somewhat rare (in the landscape) small ornamental tree, the red buckeye is covered with showy pinkish red flowers in spring. The flowers are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. The green leaves are attractive, although they drop very early in fall with no significant color change. The tree produces buckeyes (seeds) which are bitter and inedible, but are easily grown into more trees if sown when fresh. The shape is usually an upright rounded oval, although that may vary. More flowers will be produced if the tree is grown in more sun, however the leaves may scorch and drop by late summer, and flowering is still very showy in partial shade. North American Native.
