- The Red Maple has green leaves during the summer, it is the fall color that is red. The early spring flowers are also red, and although they are a welcome sign that spring is coming, they are not showy. The shape is rounded or pyramidal when young, and becomes rounded or oval with age. Fast growth habit. Native. One of the first trees to color in fall. Many selections have been made for superior fall color and uniformity of shape. 'October Glory' is one of the best. It holds its leaves longer and has a reliable deep red fall color. It has an upright rounded shape. 'Red Sunset' colors earlier, and is a bright scarlet.
